Gold Nugget
Verse 20: He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.
Commentary
In one of our recent devotions we dealt with the perils of hanging around with ungodly people. Today we will look at the flip side of this. Just as we referenced Psalm 1 and it's position on the bad company to avoid, we will also see what the bible says about the good company to keep. Hebrews 10:25 reads, "not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." This verse is often used to remind us of our need to go to church and fellowship with the saints. It is a good approach, but also stresses the need to stay close to godly people for the edification of one another. As today's gold nugget says, "He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed."
When you go to a professional sporting event, there is something exciting about all those people wearing the same team colors and logos. You feel united with them because of your common interest. This is natural human instinct. Fishermen hang out with fisherman; hunters hang out with hunters, etc. It is our human instinct to join with people of our interest and passions. This should be even more true for Christians. We need each other more today than ever before. Remember what Hebrews 10:25 says; "and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." As this world draws colder and colder, darker and darker, it's going to be more and more difficult for Christians. We need to draw strength from each other and unite in one accord.
Prayer
Lord, I need to be reminded of my need for other believers and maintain those relationships. As a matter of fact, I need to make those relationships priority over worldly relationships. Help me to encourage others and receive encouragement from them.
Amen
