Gold Nugget
Verse 11: “He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread, but he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding.”
Commentary
I remember once having a flat screen tv that went out on me. I planned on replacing it, but waited and waited. When I was younger, I would have forced it in early. By that I mean, before I could really
afford it. I would get what I wanted now and just accept the struggle that
would soon follow and figure it would be worth it. Actually, it was worth it… for the first day, but when the struggle comes, the reality of my “frivolous”
action reminds me (too late) that I wasn’t ready. Today’s “gold nugget” speaks
on this issue, “He who tills his land will
be satisfied with bread, but he who follows frivolity is devoid
of understanding.”
Although having a flat screen is an acceptable luxury, there should be many other things ahead of it in line. Things like, my children’s
wants and needs. I knew I would probably get a new TV in the not too distant future, but it wasn't a priority
for me at that time. The old box TV worked fine. The word used in today’s “gold
nugget” (frivolity) means what it sounds like – “frivolous”. By
definition, “not having any serious purpose or value”. Although we can see the financial aspect of this character
deficiency, it goes far beyond just the monetary applications. Many of us put
things that “have no serious purpose or value” as a priority in our lives. Let us allow the value of more productive and meaningful agendas replace those of little
value and we'll be better equipped to serve in His Kingdom!
Prayer
Lord, not everything that I put in my mind and hands have purpose or
value. Help me to allow your spirit to re organize and replace my priorities
with yours. Amen
