Reading
for Today: Proverb Chapter 24
Gold Nugget
Verse 6: For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counselors there is safety.
Commentary
For starters, we know all wisdom comes from God, but He most often delivers it through His people. Today’s gold
nugget reads, “For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a
multitude of counselors there is safety”. Solomon encouraged his
reader to find comfort in counsel. Solomon displays here a timeless principle
of God. Even through the New Testament, we find the framework of the church
would include relying on a body of believers to be a solid church. Concerning
the gifts of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12, Scripture teaches us that each
person is given a gift for the whole and that the whole benefit from the gift. This
included the gift of wisdom and the gift of knowledge. Thus we conclude, that
God has always led us to find wisdom in the council of others and to avoid
working alone.
Most bible scholars agree, Solomon, the writer of Proverbs is also the writer of Ecclesiastes (E-kleezy-asteez). We do find a verse in Ecclesiastes that I’d like to bind with today’s gold nugget in Proverbs. King Solomon knew, as he wrote in Ecclesiastes, that “Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” So not only to we find wisdom in numbers, but we also find strength and a defense in numbers. That being said, this is intended to apply to godly people giving godly wisdom. As Solomon’s son would eventually find out, there may have been a consensus among the council of his friends, but it led to a divided Kingdom.
Prayer
Lord, help
me to find godly people with godly wisdom. I know you want me to have friends to
turn to that will always point me to you. Amen
