Gold Nugget
Verse 9: “How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep?”
Commentary
Whether
it is physical laziness that keeps us from getting up and making things happen in
our day or a lack of mental drive for making things happen in our life, we
will suffer the effects of failure either way. Knowing
the right thing to do and not doing it can be the result of several deficiencies. It could be
from fear, laziness, selfishness and so on. Whatever the reason, it is in our court
to get the ball back over the net. We may have to overcome many obstacles,
including laziness. We know or have known people that have literally slept
their days away and suffered the financial, social and even health ruins as a
result. Any of those ruins can be the results from sleeping your life away by not finding the motivation to put in the
hard work. Laziness, or slothfulness (as the bible describes) reveals itself in
many ways. Those of us that wake up and go to work on time may think we are excluded from the “slothful” category, but there are other ways of being lazy
than we normally identify as laziness. If we work hard at our jobs we consider ourselves anything but lazy. However, there are many areas of
our lives that require work also. We can
put in 40+ hours in the workplace, but fail to put in the work to restore, heal
and maintain relationships. There is work to be done in relationships with our spouse,
children, extended family and most importantly, our relationship with God. All
of these relationships require work. If we are not willing to put in the work
to tend to these relationships, then we are lazy, no matter how hard we work in
our Monday-Friday work week. These relationships are in need of our attention.
The question is, as today’s “gold nugget” asks, “How long will you slumber, O
sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep?”
Prayer
Lord, there are other areas of my life than just the work place that I have been guilty of being a sluggard. Help me to take greater concern in tending to my relationships with family, friends and most importantly you. Amen
